APW - Illinois, Bunn Special, 23J, rare HC model, 18S, gold-filled HC recase with ornate engraving detail including an idyllic town scene on rear, initials on front, case contains a Jas. Boss paper with matching case s#, white enamel DS Gothic numeral dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel, bright spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#2288663. A beautiful example of this rare watch, the hunting case versions of the 23 jewel 18 size Bunn Special are quite rare and the total production of the present variant is believed to be 100 made. The total production of all versions of the hunting case 23 jewel 18 size Bunn Special grade movements is 510 made which is divided among four variants; this total is comprised of 100 made marked as the present lot, 200 made with Bunn Special marking and a block lettered "Illinois Watch Co." barrel bridge marking, 10 made with Bunn Special marking and a two-tone gold circular damascene, and 200 made that were not signed Bunn Special but instead carried private label marking of "Interstate Chronometer." Mvt: GRO, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, some oxide to rim of winding wheel; dial has two faint outer chapter hls between 10 and 11, very faint hl below seconds-register near 6, small edge chip under bezel at 9; excellent-plus hands; case shows almost no wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; good glass crystal.
